tele watch -talent shows

bharat ki shaan- shouts one promo; sangeet ka pratham vishwayudh is hurled at you as soon as you change the channel. and even sports channels are not a safe haven anymore -mandira bedi holds you by her noodle straps and beckons you to take up the dream job. make no mistake -this is peak season for the newest craze of indian television-talent hunt contests.
but lets not be ''holier than thou'' here- whatever their limitations -they are a welcome break from the neverending tedium of ekta kapoor's overdressed saas bahus. and confessedly -some of the shows are really throwing up some astonishing talent.lets talk about the most popular ones- SAREGAMAPA and INDIAN IDOL 3.

lets start with INDIAN IDOL 3- most probably the show with the highest viewership at the moment. it is close to its crescendo now -with only three contestants left- emon chatterji, prasant tamang and amit paul. after hoping week in and week out that ankita mishra is shown the door -she was finally booted this week.it was both sad and surprising that javed akhtar preferred her to emon - javed ji i just want to ask -for all her thumkas and theatrics-all her midriff baring dresses- can she sing? let alone being one of the top four young talents of india- is she worthy of being in the top 400 even. punk and attitude are all very good -but lets not confuse the issue here- we are looking for a singer here- not the new face of indian womanhood.in my opinion -she should have never got the nov ahead of padmanav in the wild card round. anyways all's well that ends well - and its best for INDIAN IDOL that she's not going to win it -other wise it would have been one more case of the most popular show churing out the lease talked about singer -ala sandeep acharya.
moving on now to SAREGAMAPA -sangeet ka pratham vishwayudh;there are problems here too- but thankfully its a problem of plenty.the sheer amount of talent that this show has gathered together is just unbelievable -who will you pick and who will you leave out -on one hand there's the ethereal raja hassan who sings sufi numbers which even kailash kher will find hard to match up to,on the other hand there's the pcoket sized aneek -with a vocie and style any play back singer will die for.then there's sweet poonam -risen from dust literally -whose reindition of vandemataram has impressed even lataji. musharrat, amanat, sumedha, mouli - u cant leave out a single performance. this friday saw the sad ouster of harpreet deol -another wonderfully versatile singer and performer-but then -anyone who goes out from now on -with leave a trail of sighs and tears from all and sundry. saturday's episode was further enriched by the inimitable lalu prasad ji- who characteristically has declared that he will employ poonam in the railways if nothing else. i just cant think who will be eliminated next week -coz everyone performed so well this week.
